How we check whether Google and AI tools can find a business
More people now ask an AI assistant who to call, as well as Google. Here's what our free search check looks at, and what it found when we ran it on our own website first.
54% of UK adults now use AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini (Ofcom, 2026), and AI agents can now search, compare and book on someone's behalf. If they can't find what a business offers, or how to reach it, they move on to one they can.
From inside a business, you can't see what these tools see. That's why every free AI consultation with us includes a Google, AI and agent search check.
What the check looks at
- Every page Google can see, on a computer and a phone.
- Google's own Lighthouse tests for speed and search basics.
- Test searches for what you sell and where you sell it, to see who buyers find instead.
- Your nearest competitors, side by side.
- What the wider web says about you, from Companies House to review sites.
- Whether ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can reach your site, and how easily AI can describe what you do.
- Whether AI agents that search and book for people can find what you offer and how to reach you.
It's up to 79 checks, depending on the business, each based on something we found on the site or online. Nothing is guessed, and anything we couldn't confirm is marked.
We ran it on ourselves first
Before checking anyone else's website, we checked our own.
76 out of 100 Fair
88 out of 100 Strong
91 out of 100 Strong
The first run showed what was holding us back:
- Our services had no pages of their own, only sections on the homepage, so there was nothing for Google to show when someone searched for one of them.
- Our main headline said what we believe, not what we do or who it's for.
- We used our own name for our main product, while buyers search for "CRM".
- Our booking page loaded Google's calendar for every visitor, which made it heavy.
- We had no articles at all.
In between, we fixed each of these. Every service now has its own page, the headline says what we do and who for, we call a CRM a CRM, the booking calendar loads only when you ask for it, and this is the first of our Insights articles. Three days after the first run, the same check scored the site 88, Strong. On 21 October, with our first Insights articles live, it scored 91.
The first run covered most of the checks, as a few weren't finished yet. The later runs covered every one.
What it can and can't tell you
The scores are our own assessment, not a Google rating, and we can't promise rankings or a place in AI answers. What the check does give you is a clear list of what to fix first, and you keep the scorecard.
